Abstract

Quantitative methods can be used to determine the economic value of Public Libraries. This technique is limited to direct services and can only be applied when annual use data is available. Examples of services that can be quantified include circulation of materials, rental of library space, computer use and reference services. Each service is assigned a range of values that represent a discounted market price for similar services. These values are aggregated to determine the total annual value of the library. This study uses this technique to determine the economic value of the Anchorage Municipal Libraries.
