Abstract

Recent studies suggest that phannaceuticals and over-the-counter drugs have been detected in wastewater and groundwater throughout the United States. In this study, a selection of pharmaceutical compounds will be quantified in the wastewater and wastewater discharge streams in the Municipality of Anchorage. The compound contaminant levels are unknown at this time. Due to the increased usage of pharmaceuticals, there may be an unexpected exposure and potential harmful effects on the environment and ecology, which may be a cause for concern. Samples will be taken from wastewater effluent, wastewater discharge streams and possible ground water wells at different sites across the Municipality. Samples will be analyzed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled to a Tandem Mass Spectrometer (HP-LC MSIMS), which is designed to detect low levels of pharmaceuticals and other organic contaminants.
