Abstract

Identity management is increasingly important in today's technology-oriented world. Unfortunately, modem security techniques are far from flawless. Infallible identity management is the "holy grail" of computer security. The aim of this proposed project is to strengthen and enhance computer security by marrying established techniques with an innovative software design. Achieving this goal involves building a prototype/proof-of concept computer system to silently, unobtrusively, and continuously verify the identity of the current operator using biometric authentication in the form of iris recognition. The main novelty in the project is the design of the software, which will periodically re-check the identity of the current user. If successful, the design of the system will have important implications beyond mere computer terminal security. For example, the proposed system could be deployed to ensure the legitimate status of an aircraft pilot, or to verify the presence and identity of a customer at an automatic banking machine.
