Abstract

I intend to spend three months over the summer living in rural northeastern Brazil.
I will take an intensive pre-vestibular course to broaden my Portuguese vocabulary and
perfect my grammar. This will allow me to read and fully comprehend three chosen
Brazilian works as originally written. I believe this will give me an intimate view into the Brazilian consciousness and the opportunity to appreciate minute cultural subtleties in my day-to-day experiences.

First and foremost my project goal is to improve my ability to understand and
communicate effectively in Portuguese. I will use this skill to relate intimately with my community and create a bi-lingual, collaborative website with special attention given to the themes established in these three novels and how they relate to the daily lives of Brazilian citizens. The website will serve as a cross-cultural investigation as well as a prototype of what I believe could make a valuable pedagogical tool. When I return to UAA, I will not only present at the Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium but I will also arrange, with the support and assistance of my faculty mentor Patricia Fagan, a presentation for the UAA Department of Languages to share the many benefits the use of a website like this could provide language students. This project will hopefully benefit the UAA Department of Languages, the Office of Study Abroad, and the Office of International Affairs.
