Abstract

Abstract and Specific Aims:
Marine mammal cardiology and skeletal tissues have been extensively studied; however, a connection between seal pup biochemical properties and myosin heavy chains (MHC) has
not been shown. The specific aims of this study are to determine if the MHC expression in the heart ventricles of Harp seals change as they develop; and if so, whether the changes correlate with previously measured biochemical properties.

Specific Aim #1: To analyze if and how the MHC expression changes in the heart ventricles as Harp seals develop.

Specific Aim #2: To determine if the developmental changes in the MHC of the heart ventricles correlate with hormone levels throughout the life of the seal.

Specific Aim #3: To determine if there are correlated changes in MHC isoform expression and previously measured biochemical profiles.
