Internship at DNR

The Department of Natural Resources has another internship opening:

There is an Internship opening in the Land Records Information Section (LRIS). The position will operate from within the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Unit and is expected to last until June 2009. It is also expected that future opportunities will continue beyond June 2009. Salary starts at $12.50/hour and up, depending on experience.

Applicants should have completed at least CS 201 and CS 202 or the equivalent in Java programming.

The GIS Unit offers an interesting set of enterprise platforms on which to apply programming knowledge. The platforms are Database, GIS and WEB. While the GIS platform may not be familiar to the students it is intrinsically a regular relational database system with some special data types that perform spatial functions. Our main enterprise database system is Oracle which uses standard SQL statements, and the main programming languages supported are Java and JSP.

LRIS system developers/programmers work closely within a team environment to build and maintain Database, WEB, and GIS applications developed by the Unit. The ideal candidate will have at least one programming semester in Java, must have a strong motivational interest in programming, and a similar interest in developing cross-functional expertise in these areas. Interpersonal and organizational skills such as listening, documenting, presenting, and training are all key qualities for a successful candidate.

The internship offers an excellent opportunity to motivated individuals interested in developing expertise in several computing platforms in the Information Technology environment and working with cutting-edge technology.
